Laser therapy is a safe, non-invasive treatment that can help dogs and cats with a variety of medical conditions.
This therapy goes by many different names, including photobiostimulation, cold laser, low-level laser, or Class IV Laser therapy… to name a few!
But whatever you want to call it… it’s a great way to help your dog or cat heal from wounds or injuries, reduce chronic pain, and improve their quality of life.
How does laser therapy work?
Basically, the light from the laser works at the cellular level to…
- Stimulate and promote healing
- Reduce pain
- Decrease inflammation
- Improve circulation
- Stimulate the release of endorphins (“feel-good” hormones that reduce stress and pain)
- Improve transport of oxygen and nutrients to cells
And note, this type of laser is different from the ones used for surgery. It’s designed specifically to encourage healing.
Which conditions does laser therapy treat in pets?
Laser therapy can help with…
- Faster recovery after an injury
- Faster healing after surgery
- Wound healing
- Chronic pain, such as arthritis
- Back or joint problems
- Skin lesions, like hot spots
- Anal gland ruptures or inflammation
- Ear problems
- Gingivitis
- And more…
- And while it’s not a substitute for other medical treatments that may be needed… the laser can work in conjunction with other therapies, to get your pet feeling better fast.
Is laser therapy safe?
When operated by a trained professional, yes, laser therapy is very safe, and side effects are extremely rare.
Plus, laser therapy can be combined with other treatments — such as pain medications — with no danger of interactions.
Is laser therapy painful?
Your pet may notice a warmth or tingling sensation where the laser therapy is administered.
Overall, it tends to be a pleasant sensation rather than a painful one, and many pets seem to relax during their sessions.
Occasionally, there may be mild discomfort before the healing process is in full effect.
How long does laser therapy take to work?
This depends on the severity of the condition being treated, as well as how long the symptoms have been there.
Each individual session is short — less than 10 minutes. Most pets will need to come in for more frequent sessions at the beginning of their treatment plan, and then come in less often as their symptoms improve.
Some pets may have a decrease in pain or other symptoms as soon as the first treatment. For others, it may take a few sessions before any improvement is noticed.
